Cost-Effective PVC Plasticizer-ESBO Epoxidized soybean oil

  • Plasticization: ESBO effectively plasticizes PVC and other polymers, improving their flexibility without compromising their structural integrity.
  • Stability: ESBO imparts stability to PVC and other materials, making them less prone to degradation from heat, UV radiation, and chemical exposure.
  • Non-Toxicity: ESBO is non-toxic and safe for use in food packaging, medical devices, and other applications where contact with humans is likely.
  • Sustainability: ESBO is derived from renewable soybean oil, making it an environmentally friendly choice compared to some alternative plasticizers.
PVC Plasticizer esbo

Plasticizer: ESBO is mainly used as a plasticizer in the manufacture of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. It can improve the flexibility and durability of PVC products, making them more suitable for applications such as wire and cable insulation, automotive interiors and leather.
Non-toxic food packaging: ESBO is often used as a plasticizer and stabilizer in food packaging materials such as plastic wrap and food-grade PVC containers. Its non-toxic and food-safe properties make it a first choice for these applications.
Coatings: ESBO can be used as a coating agent and is widely used in industries such as automobiles to provide adhesion and durability for coatings and paints.
Auxiliary stabilizer: ESBO can provide the role of an auxiliary stabilizer during PVC processing.

ESBO-Epoxidized soybean oil introduction

Chemical formula of epoxidized soybean oil/ESBO/ESO

Molecular formula: C57H106O10

Epoxidized soybean oil, commonly known as ESBO, is a versatile compound extracted from soybean oil. It is a light yellow liquid that undergoes a unique chemical reaction called epoxidation, which gives the substance valuable properties. ESBO can be used in a wide range of applications in different industries. Especially in the plastic PVC industry.

ESBO-Epoxidized soybean oil Secondary Plasticizer Application

Secondary Plasticizer:

ESBO imparts flexibility and workability to rigid PVC compounds, reducing brittleness.

While less efficient than primary phthalate plasticizers, it is widely used as a co-plasticizer, especially in applications requiring low migration, low volatility, and good extraction resistance.

It improves processability during calendering, extrusion, and molding.

Key Applications: Wire and cable insulation/jacketing, flooring (vinyl tiles, sheets), wall coverings, synthetic leather, coated fabrics, plastisols (spread coatings, dip molding), food packaging films, cling film, gaskets, tubing, hoses.

ESBO-Epoxidized soybean oil Molecular Formula

Due to its nature as a complex mixture of triglycerides with varying degrees of epoxidation, ESBO does not have a single, precise molecular formula. However, an average molecular formula can be used to represent its typical composition:

  • Approximate Average Molecular Formula: C₅₇H₁₀₆O₁₀ (This represents a triglyceride with a high degree of epoxidation, common for ESBO derived from soybean oil).

  • Molecular Weight Range: The average molecular weight typically falls within the range of 950 – 1050 g/mol.

  • Key Indicator – Oxirane Oxygen Content: The most critical specification for ESBO is its Oxirane Oxygen Content, usually expressed as a percentage (e.g., 6.0% – 7.0%). This directly measures the concentration of reactive epoxy groups, which is crucial for its performance as a plasticizer and stabilizer.
